The Elephant, the rider and the path

ROLE: Co-ProduceR, CREATIVE DIRECtor, EDItor, POST-PRODUCTION (in 4 languages)

This video was one of a set of animated video assets I helped produce for the e-learning course “Introduction to Pride”. As Creative Director in the Global Programs Department at Rare, I worked closely with the Training Management team to conceptualize and produce creative content for our training programs, which we then translated into four other languages (see it here in Spanish, Portuguese and Bahasa Indonesia). This colorful explainer video is based on auther Dan Heath’s behavior change analogy “the rider and elephant” and he graciously agreed to do the narration for this video. This is the most-viewed clip on Rare’s Youtube channel.

THE DIFFUSION OF INNOVATION THEORY

ROLE: Co-Producer, Co-writer, Creative director, Editor, POST-PRODUCTION (in 4 languages)

Another in the animated video series for the e-learning course “Introduction to Pride”. Teri and I condensed the Diffusion of Innovation theory into an easy-to-understand animated video, featuring the voice of Rare CEO Brent Jenks. All the animated videos in this series were then translated into 3 other languages (See it here in Spanish, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia) and used in global Rare’s e-learning curriculum. This video is often commented on by Youtube viewers as one of the best explanation videos for this complex theory.

THE “S” CURVE

ROLE: Co-Producer, CREATIVE DIRECtor, Editor, POST-PRODUCTION (in 4 languages)

Another in the animated video series for the e-learning course “Introduction to Pride”, this one for the concept of the “S” Curve in behavior adoption, another aspect of the Diffusion of Innovation theory. All the animated videos in this series were then translated into 3 other languages (see it here in Spanish, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia) and used in global Rare’s e-learning curriculum.

RESTORING OUR OCEANS

ROLE: Co-Producer, CREATIVE DIRECtor, Editor, POST-PRODUCTION

I produced this video with Rare’s Training Department as part of a set of animated video assets for the e-learning courses in Rare’s “FISH FOREVER” program. The diversity in the character design we established in this video would serve as part of the brand for all our e-learning courses. In addition to being creative director and project manager on these animated videos, I also managed the translation, post-production and launch.

INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL MARKETING, PART 1 (of 4)

ROLE: CREATIVE DIRECTOR, writer, editor, Post-Production

I produced the 4-part series of “explainer” videos for Rare’s online learning platform that serve as an introduction to the history and concepts of Social Marketing. I kept these minimal in terms of sound - no music or sfx, with plenty of space between narration - to facilitate using edited pieces in presentations or other multimedia, and to accommodate the time variations for translated narration.

SEED TO STORE ON LOCATION in CHINA

ROLE: writer, videographer, editor, Post-Production

This video was produced for promoting the Seed to Store program on social media. I shot the video verite-style while on a site visit to one of the prototype farms in Xianghou, China. The farmers on this land have been farming organically for years, in direct contrast to neighboring villages that were using pesticides and chemicals. The farmers here exuded a dignity that matched their commitment to ideals, and for me visually I could see it in the way they showed up for the video shoots, displaying obvious pride in their relationship to the land.

GILDAS ANDRIAMALALA - SOCIAL MARKETING IN MADAGASCAR

ROLE: Producer, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, EDITOR

VIDOEGRPAHY and Co-PRODUCER: ANALISSA BIANCHESI

This is one of my favorite videos I produced at Rare. Analissa Bianchessi, a Rare Program Manager, shot footage of the charismatic Rare Conservation Fellow Gildas Andriamalala on location in Madagascar. Her video footage follows Gildas through Andavadoaka, a remote fishing site on the coast of Madagascar, where he is trying to establish a social marketing campaign to encourage sustainable fishing. Using her extensive footage and some follow up interviews I shot in Arlington, I was able to construct a story that follows Gildas and his experience learning about Social impact marketing.

DUAN HONGLIAN - SOCIAL MARKETING IN CHINA

ROLE: PRODUCER, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, EDITOR

VIDEOGRAPHY: SHIYANG LI

This is one of dozens of videos I produced that highlighted the social impact marketing efforts of Rare campaign managers around the world. I had plenty of video footage to create this series, having provided my colleagues in our global offices with training and guides on interviewing and taking photos and video. The biggest challenge as an editor was keeping them brief, as condensing everything about a social impact campaign - the problem, the people, the campaign - is complex and interconnected. The use of subtitles instead of dubbing meant that we could easily feature these on social media.

MARINE PROTECTED AREAS - PHILIPPINES

ROLE: CO-Producer, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, EDITOR, POST-PRODUCTION

CO-PRODUCER: STUART GREEN (DIRECTOR, RARE PHILIPPINES)
VIDEOGRAPHY: SIMON ENDERBY (SCUBA ZOO MALAYSIA)

A long-form introductory video to Marine Protected Areas in the Philippines, as told by the people and leaders of these communities. Stuart Green and I spent two weeks interviewing and filming in the coastal communities of rural Philippines to present the most accurate picture of what an MPA means to the people it affects most. Editing and Post-production included intake of over 60 hours of interviews and b-roll, translating interviews prior to editing, multiple stakeholder approvals, and several recuts to achieve the goal: a video that could be used to introduce the program to new donors and partner, and secure additional funding sources.

LAMANDAU, INDONESIA - VIDEO POSTCARD

ROLE: EDITOR, Post-Production

VIDEOGRAPHY & Co-Producer: JASON HOUSTON

I edited this video from footage shot by noted photojournalist Jason Houston in one of our first professional collaborations. I’ve now worked with Jason for 10 years on a variety of projects, both visual and strategic, and I’m proud of our work together. Jason is a passionate photojournalist who is deeply immersed in the the practice of giving agency to the communities and areas he documents.

SOCIAL IMPACT MARKETING IN CUENCA, ECUADOR

Role: PRODUCER, Videographer, editor, Post-Production

I produced this video postcard from footage I shot during a visit to Cuenca, Ecuador, where we observed and experienced the ARA water conservation campaign led by local conservationist Marco Bustamante.
